Picking A Bad Name For Your Business = NO Success.

Many people don’t realize how important it really is to choose a good name for your business. I’ve been thinking about this on and off today and came up with a little insight that I thought I would share.

For starters take Google, do you think Google would be where it is today if it would have been named something else? As an example, do you think if Google would have been named “Yahoo” and the current Yahoo named “Google” instead, that they would still be on top of the internet world like they are today?

I think having a good and unique name for your company or business is very important. So many times I have come across businesses or companies with names that are cheesy or non-unique. Often times names like that can deter me from going with that business entirely.

Business names can tell people a lot about your company. How it functions, how reputable it is, etc. By using different names for your business I believe that you can “imply” a lot of different emotions like how “bad-ass”, “professional”, or “creative” your company is. You can also connect to your customers by coming up with a name that helps them feel more comfortable.

Sticking with the Google example, I think “Google” works out really well. When I think of the word “Google”, other words like “fun”, “happy”, and even “down-to-earth” come to mind. Now keep in mind that I do have some bias because I already know what kind of company Google is, but I still think the name of their company played a big role in how I feel about them today, and it is one of the main reasons why I keep going back.

The main point I’m trying to make is the name of your company plays a bigger role than you think in how successful it’s going to be or what people are going to think about it. Even after they know about your business and what it’s all about.

Another example would be all of the affiliate networks like “Commission Junction“, “Azoogle Ads“, “NeverBlueAds“, etc. What feelings or thoughts do the names of those companies convey in your mind? Think about this question not only before but also after you have been to their sites and know what they are all about.

Also note that having a good name for your business also goes way beyond this into the realm of “branding” and the like.

Well there’s a little insight for you all, hope it makes some sense.

ttyl,
Nick
