My Current Thoughts On April Fools

  • Awesome April Fools jokes to those that I have seen like Darren at ProBlogger, Paul over at UberAffiliate, John Chow, or even Atmosphere!
  • The People who are unsubscribing to these bloggers because of their jokes make me LOL. I think some people need to get a sense of humor and settle down. As a blogger myself, I really don’t care if someone is going to unsubscribe because of a joke. Personally, I would rather not even have those people subscribed to my blog in the first place.

    What are your thoughts?

  • I feel bad that I don’t have my own April Fools joke set up. Would have been a fun time
  • I need to stop being lazy
  • One of my favorite groups Atmoshpere just released their new Sad Clown Bad Spring EP and it’s awesome. Not only that but it’s free!

Have a good april fools day everyone!

P.S. I have something special for you guys coming within the next couple days, make sure you check back if you want to be a part of it!

My WordPress 2.5 Upgrade Adventure

I just made the switch to the newly released version 2.5 of WordPress!

It’s totally different then the old one and I’m loving it so far. Especially the one click plugin upgrades and the fixed wysiwyg editor.

Only thing that went wrong as you can probably tell is that all of my uploaded files are gone! When I uploaded the files the entire folders of information got overwritten so I have to re-make all of my screenshots. So that’s the project of the day for tomorrow, getting all my images working again.

Just a perfect reason to make a back-up before you install it. It even said that, but of course I thought I was just a pro in the game and didn’t need to. LOL

Well I hope the installation goes alright for you. It would be cool to hear about other people’s favorite parts about the new version, so if you have any just shoot me a comment!

Hilarious John Chow

I know just about everyone is going to start throwing this on their blog and it’s going to get old really fast, but I’m sorry I just had to!

This is famous blogger John Chow unexpectedly being one the funniest comedians I have ever heard.

I wanted to throw this up not only for your entertainment… but so that I can come back easily so I can share it with others.

Funny Stuff!

[New]: My World Of Warcraft Resources Page

A lot of my friends were having trouble downloading the “Quest Helper” add-on for World Of Warcraft off of curse.com because it’s been really slow lately. I ended up uploading it to my website so that some people I know could download it without having to deal with slow loading times.

I think it might have something to do with the new 2.4 patch and curse.com is probably getting a ton of traffic of people trying to download new add-ons that work with the patch.

Anyways, what started out as a simple file upload ended up turning into a full “mini-site” (I was bored) of resources. Well right now I only have the Quest Helper add-on, but in the future as I find some other cool stuff i’ll keep adding it and i’ll see where this little site goes. Who knows.

So at this point, if you still haven’t gotten the updated version of the best add-on ever, you can do it by visiting my little World Of Warcraft page by clicking here!

For those of you who don’t play “WoW” or don’t give a crap about what I just said, i’m sorry. I’ll make sure to think up a more worthwhile post to make for tomorrow.

[Fixed]: WordPress Image Upload Overwrites Existing Images

I have been uploading a lot of screen captures taken on my mac to my blog lately and recently noticed that WordPress seems to be overwriting the previous files I have uploaded with the same name.

Mac screen captures are saved the the desktop as “Picture 1.png” (”Picture #.png” # increments if there is already “Picture (#-1).png on my desktop) and when WordPress uploads the file it checks to make sure that it doesn’t already exist as “Picture 1.png” and then uploads it.

The problem is when WordPress uploads the file it changes it into “picture-1.png” by making it lowercase and adding a hyphen. The next time I go to upload the file “Picture 1.png” it looks for “Picture 1.png” which it doesn’t find because my previous file got changed to “picture-1.png”. Thus WordPress uploads the new file, changes it’s case while adding a hyphen, and thus overwriting my old file.

I did some searching and right away found a simple fix to the problem thanks to this thread in the support section on the WordPress site: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/161949

The file you need to edit is “wp-admin/includes/file.php”. Lines 170 and 171 need to be moved up to before the system checks for duplicate files. That way it checks to see if “picture-1.png” is already there and not “Picture 1.png”. Score!

Here’s a screenshot I took outlining how to fix the problem:

Hope this helps,
Nick

P.S. I just tested it for the first time on this post and sure enough it uploaded the file as “picture-11.png” instead of overwriting the existing “picture-1.png” I already had uploaded.

Happy Easter and more

Hope everyone had a great Easter for those who celebrate. Otherwise if anything a good couple days off work/school. :)

Been pretty busy with things lately so I’m sorry for the delay. I’ve been trying to stay away from it, but thanks to some of my friends it finally got me. “What are you referring to?”, you might ask. I am referring to a MMORPG called World Of Warcraft.

I knew from the get go I shouldn’t have started playing this game, but it’s too late and now I’m probably going to be playing it for awhile! While this does mean I wont be playing much more xBox, I still have the fact that I am playing video games. I need to work on that, however the one thing a college kid wants to do after class is just play some good old video games. Sometimes everybody needs a good break from life. In my case, WoW must be the way to go.

Ok but really, aside from school and the occasional video games (which are not so occasional lately), I have been working on a few other projects I will be launching soon online. I’ll let you know all about it when it comes, I’m pretty excited to get some things going. As for my pay per click progress, things are going well. Had to slow down for a bit until I receive my most recent affiliate checks, but should be back in business here pretty soon. I’l keep you guys updated with any tips that I can think of along the way.

I’m still fairly new to affiliate marketing, but I want to share as much of the things that I learn as I can. I know how hard it can be to get started and I love sharing my knowledge with others and helping people succeed. It’s an exciting process, and once you succeed once you’re set to go. It’s a tough learning curve but don’t give up!

Off Topic: If anybody knows of a good blog designer they should let me know because I’m looking to shed this template and I just don’t have time right now to make my own.

Off Topic 2: If anybody has any requests of posts or anything that they would like to learn more about that they think I might be able to answer, let me know! Not only do I enjoy blogging for myself, but I also enjoy writing about things that are enjoyable to you. Guest posts are also always welcome. :)

I also thank all those who have subscribed so far to my blog, and I encourage those who haven’t to definitely do so. I try to post interesting and unique things that you wont find anywhere else! I also appreciate the occasional comment :), makes me feel like this is all worthwhile, aside from my own personal satisfaction of getting my thoughts out.

Getting people to read your blog i.e. Linkbait

Linkbait something that I’m either not good at, or I just don’t really try/care enough about. The fact that I don’t think about it much while trying to come up with something to post about is a shame. It really seems like it has to be one of the most powerful ways of getting people to come visit your website. It’s amazing how many links a crazy, informative, or original blog post can get you to your website.

The KEY WORDS there are ones like “crazy”, “informative”, and “original”. People just don’t link back to crappy unoriginal posts that it seems like everybody else under the sun writes about. That is unless you are already a well known blogger, with some sort of charisma. You really need to focus on creating original, interesting, and one of a kind content (see, more key words ;)) if you want people to post a link on their site to yours. You have to make the user feel like they got something out of your post and that they need to share it with the rest of the world.

Now if I was going to write such a post, I would definitely try to picture myself in other people’s shoes and get an idea of what everybody is interested in and wants to read. It might help by going to your favorite blogs and noticing some of the things that make you interested in a post. What certain things stand out in your eyes that make you want to post a link to it?

For me, one of the main things I look for is knowledge/expertise on a certain subject. I keep coming back to a site and possibly linking to it if I am getting something out of it intellectually. Notice some of the other posts I have made… even the last post from ted.com. I made that post because I found that video helpful to me and I just had to share it with the readers on my blog in hopes that you would get something out of it as well! Also note my blogroll. I never have met or talked to 90% of the people who own the sites listed. I just chose to post the links because I have found them to be either helpful or entertaining to me in some way or another.

Another big thing that gets me “sharing away” is when something is outrageously funny or just plain stupid. I enjoy reading/watching stuff like that and more often then not I also like to share that kind of stuff.

Now that I think of it, another thing to keep in mind is the audience you are trying to reach… well I’m sure most of you are here to learn about stuff like this or making money online so while you might enjoy the occasional “outrageous” post, you probably wouldn’t want to see them over and over again. I’m sure you have other sites you go to for stuff like that. However, I could be totally wrong so just let me know if I’m digging myself a hole. If it’s more funny random stuff you want I can definitely do that!

Well that’s pretty much all I have for you today. Those were just my random thoughts that I pulled out of my ass about 30 seconds before this post, not to mention the stuff I thought of while writing the post. Which was most likely a lot more thoughts then what I had before I started writing. Anyway, hope you at least got something out of it.

I think as a general piece of information or tip, always try to put yourself in your visitors shoes and figure out what they want. No matter how many people tell you they don’t care about what others think online, they really do. I mean after all, what’s the main reason for making a website in the first place?

Talk to you guys later,
Nick

P.S. Don’t forget to subscribe if you haven’t already, and if you want you can link back to me :) if you let me know i’ll do the same. Comments are also always very appreciated (to make me feel good about myself for knowing there are actually people who read my blog).

P.P.S. Now after reviewing this post, I realize that link-baiting is something I need to work on a lot more. So should you!

Richard St. John: 8 Words To Success

It’s been a couple days since I have posted, sorry. I have been working diligently on getting a Ringtone campaign set up and creating a write up so I can show you how I did it. Hopefully i’ll be done with that soon, in the meantime I thought this video would be something good to post. It’s a short 4 minute video on how to become more successful, not only online but offline and in general life as well.

Thought this was a very motivational video. Ted.com has some great stuff and I urge you to watch some of the other videos on that site. Some really interesting stuff!

P.S. Comments are greatly appreciated! If you like what you saw you should subscribe so I can shoot more stuff like this your way! The subscribe stuff is on the right, or the link in the top menu.
